“How To Be A Family tells people where to start, and opens the door to heart-centered parenting, says author Howard B. Schiffer, a parent, author, lecturer and workshop leader. Centered on the emotional component of being a family, the book helps families remember the connection that brought them together.
“It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day chores of being a family and forget what the essence is all about,” Schiffer says. “Between changing diapers and setting curfews, it’s sometimes hard to catch your breath, and yet by taking care of the basics and honoring the sacred trust between you and your children, you can transform your relationships and transcend the mundane.”
How To Be A Family begins with a discussion of what to look for in a partner. The book then addresses how to make the decision to have children, moving from your own little universe into the outside world, and all the way to keeping the magic alive. In addition, Schiffer offers advice on fixing family problems, and encourages readers to ask perhaps the most important question: “Why Are You Doing This?”
“Being a parent is a noble thing to do with your life,” Schiffer says. “It is a reminder of what is possible at any given moment and how to make each moment special. Instead of sitting in the car and not talking to each other on the way to school in the morning, I share a ‘morning verse’ that I use with my own kids to begin each day. We transform holiday celebrations with appreciation circles. And we bring birthdays back to an honoring of the individual. This book will help other families to create heart-centered rituals like these that create strong bonds and loving memories.”
Schiffer was inspired to write How To Be A Family by the rewarding experience of creating a family with his wife Kim, and seeing his children thrive in a heart-centered environment. A former midwife who studied with founders of the home birth movement, Schiffer is also a founding member of the Santa Barbara Men’s Community and the founder and executive director of Vitamin Angel Alliance, a nonprofit humanitarian organization. Schiffer is also the author of How To Be The Best Lover: A Guide for Teenage Boys (Heartful Loving Press, 2004), and First Love/Remembrances (Heartful Loving Press, 2004).
